September 1 -- MEETING.   Our kick-off meeting for the year will feature Gary Van Velsir, and his program on "Birding Europe's Low Countries."

September 2 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Show up at 8:00 AM at Culler Lake in Baker Park to join this half-day trip to a "leader's choice" destination.

September 17 -- FREDERICK COUNTY FALL COUNT.   Join our 12th county-wide fall census: you never know what might be passing through.   All eyes and ears are welcome!   Tally rally afterwards at Mike and Donna's house.   Compiler: Mike Welch (301-685-3561).

September 24 -- GAMBRILL STATE PARK.   Morning trip. Gambrill is an excellent location to find migrating fall warblers.   Leader: Lois Kauffman (301-845-6690).

October 6 -- MEETING.   Our speaker will be Dave Ziolkowski, who will present "Trailside Nature: Things to Pique a Birder's Interest When the Pickin's Slim."

October 7 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Leader and destination to be announced.   Meet at Culler Lake in Baker Park at 8 AM.

October 8 -- LILYPONS.   Morning trip.   This will be a joint Frederick-Montgomery bird club trip to our popular local birding hot-spot.   We'll look for American Bittern, Lincoln's and Nelson's Sparrows and other fall migrants.   Leader: Mike Welch (301-685-3561).

October 22 -- FALL AT FRED ARCHIBALD.   Morning trip.   Fall sparrows, migrants, and any number of surprises can occur at this lovely sanctuary.   Leader: Bob Schaefer (301-831-5660).

November 3 -- MEETING.   MOS Records committee member Ron Gutberlet will entertain us with "A Year on the Road with North American Birds."

November 4 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Leader and destination to be announced.   Meet at Culler Lake in Baker Park at 8 AM.

November 5 -- "TOWN HILL."   3/4 day.   We will head off to Allegany County and this lovely hawk watch point to enjoy the view and watch for migrating raptors.   Leader: Kathy Brown (301-865-1369).

November 19 -- BLACKWATER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.   Full day trip.   Waterfowl, brown-headed nuthatches, and sparrows will be our primary targets.   Leader: Kathy Calvert (301-698-1298).

December 1 -- CHRISTMAS DINNER AND MEETING.   We will be pleased to welcome Don Messersmith who will present "Seventy Years Finding and Studying Birds: My Life as a Naturalist."   Dinner will be at the Cozy Restaurant in Thurmont at a cost of $15.50 per person.   Please make reservations with and send money to Treasurer Nancy Parker before 11/26/2011.

December 2 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Leader and destination to be announced.   Meet at Culler Lake in Baker Park at 8 AM.

December 18 -- CATOCTIN CHRISTMAS COUNT #62.   Birders of all ages and levels of experience needed!   Compiler: Mike Welch (301-685-3561).

December 26 -- WASHINGTON COUNTY CHRISTMAS COUNT.   Our neighbors to the west always can use some extra help.   Compiler: Dave Weesner (301-302-6376).

January 2 -- SUGARLOAF CHRISTMAS COUNT.   Because New Year's Day is on Sunday, this count will be held on Monday.   All are welcome!   Compiler: Helen Horrocks (301-831-6315).

January 5 -- MEETING.   Kate Weatherby gave us a short version of this on Members' Night last year, and we asked for more.   Tonight we'll get the full program of her trip to Senegal in January, 2011.

January 6 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Leader and destination to be announced.   Meet at Culler Lake in Baker Park at 8 AM.

January 8 -- AUDREY CARROLL MID-WINTER COUNT.   Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:30 AM.   You may want your waterproof boots.   Compiler: David Smith (410-549-7082.

January 15 -- FRED ARCHIBALD MID-WINTER COUNT.   Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:30 AM.   Don't forget waterproof boots.   Compiler: Bob Schaefer (301-831-5660, Pres@FrederickBirdClub.org).

January 29 -- FREDERICK COUNTY MID-WINTER COUNT.   This is the last, but not least, of our winter counts!   The reward afterwards is the enjoyable tally-rally at David and Carol's house.   Compiler: David Smith (410-549-7082).

February 2 -- MEETING.   Kent Minichiello, conservation philosopher, photographer, and naturalist, returns to speak, this time with a program on "Maya Meso-America: Natural and Cultural History."

January 3 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Leader and destination to be announced.   Meet at Culler Lake in Baker Park at 8 AM.

February 11 -- PT. LOOKOUT STATE PARK.   Full day. This trip has great potential for unusual or rare birds at Pt. Lookout SP. Time permitting, we'll search for waterfowl and other winter visitors elsewhere in St. Mary's County. Leader: Marcia Balestri (301-473-5098).

February 24-26 -- MOS CONFERENCE IN OCEAN CITY.   Watch your Maryland Yellowthroat for details on this unique opportunity to attend a winter conference!

March 1 -- MEETING.   Members' Night!   This popular evening features a variety of short presentations of photos, slides, and/or videos from our members.   Please let Bob Schaefer know in advance if you want to be on the agenda (301-831-5660).

March 2 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Leader and destination to be announced.   Meet at Culler Lake in Baker Park at 8 AM.

March 10 -- TIMBERDOODLES at Audrey Carroll.   Evening trip.   Bring a flashlight and wear waterproof boots to enjoy displaying Woodcock.   Leader: David Smith (410-549-7082).

March 17 -- "LEADER'S CHOICE".   Full day.   Destinations will be determined based on what's being seen or reported recently.   Come prepared for anything - birding may be within the county, elsewhere in Maryland, or even in a neighboring state!   Let's hope for some rarities and surprises!   Leader: Marcia Balestri (301-473-5098)

March 24 -- SWAN HARBOR.   3/4 day.   We'll visit this fine park in Harford County looking for waterfowl, sparrows and wintering grassland species.   Leader: Kathy Calvert (301-698-1298).

April 5 -- MEETING.   Tonight's featured speaker is Dennis Coskren, who will present his program on "Maryland's Geology and How It Influences Habitats."

April 6 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Leader and destination to be announced.   Meet at Culler Lake in Baker Park at 8 AM.

April 7 -- HUGHES HOLLOW.   Half day.   This is one of Montgomery County's premier spots and we'll go in search of late wintering ducks, early spring migrants, and woodland and wetland species.   Leader: Jim Green (301-208-2393) and/or Bob Schaefer (301-831-5660).

April 21 -- BIG DAY IN CATOCTIN CREEK PARK.   We'll spend (the day before) Earth Day in Catoctin Creek Park seeing and recording as many species as possible in one day.   Join us for all or part of the day.   Leader: Mike Welch (301-685-3561).

April 28 -- NATIVE PLANT SALE   of the Audubon Society of Central Maryland, held at the Audrey Carroll Audubon Sanctuary.   Please support this sale at one of our favorite and most productive birding hot spots.   More information can be found at www.centralmdaudubon.org.

May 3 -- MEETING.   (NOTE: This meeting will not be at Homewood, likely Frederick High School instead. Bob Schaefer will email everybody with details.) Gail Mackernien will talk about her cruising experience in her program, "East Pacific Odyssey or ... If It's Tuesday It Must Be Ecuador."

May 4 -- "FIRST-FRIDAY" MORNING TRIP.   Leader and destination to be announced.   Meet at Culler Lake in Baker Park at 8 AM.

May 5 -- LITTLE BENNETT REGIONAL PARK.   Half day.   This park is a magnet for migrating warblers and other woodland species.   Leader: Gemma Radko (301-514-2894).

May 6 -- FRED ARCHIBALD MAY COUNT.   Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:00 AM.   Coordinator: Bob Schaefer (301-831-5660, Pres@FrederickBirdClub.org).

May 12 -- FREDERICK COUNTY MAY COUNT #47.   It's peak migration so this is the most fun you can have in helping with a census.   Lots of eyes and ears are needed!   Compiler: Mike Welch (301-685-3561).

May 13 -- AUDREY CARROLL MAY COUNT.   Meet at the Sanctuary at 6:00 AM.   Coordinator: David Smith (410-549-7082).

May 19-20 -- SHOREBIRDS WEEKEND.   We'll hit the famous shorebirding spots in Delaware looking for Red Knots and as many other species as we can find during this prime time of shorebird migration.   Our second day will probably take us to the Maryland beaches for more shorebirds as well as Whips and Chucks.   Details to be announced.   Leader: Tom Humphrey (301-696-8940).

June 2 -- MANAHAN RD.   Half day.   Migration is a week or so behind up in the Catoctins, and we should see a nice mix of warblers and other migrants up in the Manahan Rd. area.   Leader: Lois Kauffman (301-845-6690).

June 7 -- ANNUAL PICNIC.   Our favorite spot for this event is Pine Cliff Park where there is a lovely pavilion just in case we have a bit of rain.   Bring binoculars, a dish to share, plate, utensils and drink.   We'll meet at 6:00 PM for birding and chow.

June 9 -- WESTERN MARYLAND.   Full day.   This always-popular trip will take us to Allegany and Garrett Counties in search of Henslow's Sparrow, Golden-winged Warbler, Least and Alder Flycatchers, and much more.   Leader: Kathy Calvert (301-698-1298).

June 14 -- CHAPTER PLANNING MEETING.   Please come with your ideas for programs or field trips.   Call Bob Schaefer (301-831-5660) for information.
